Herpes

Herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus. Some infected persons develop herpetic sores in the genital. There is no permanent cure for herpes currently.

Spread of infection

  • Sexual contact
  • Direct skin-to-skin contact
  • Kissing with an infected person having oral herpes
  • Touched by an infected person on the genital area and around the anus
  • Other possible ways of transmission include hugging, and sharing tableware, bathtubs, towels and toilet seats.

Incubation period

2 – 5 days

Symptoms

Symptoms of herpes are not obvious and they remain unnoticed in the early stage. 4 to 5 days after the infection, signs may occur, but the disease may remain dormant for an extended period of time.

  • Flu-like symptoms such as tiredness, fever, headache, back pain and swollen lymph glands.
  • Itching around the genital and anal region and thighs. The infected area develops small blisters, which may break and cause painful sores.
  • Stinging sensation when urine touches the sores
